Anthracnose (fungus)

Tan, brown or purple spots on leaves. Remove and destroy fallen leaves. If serious, use thiophanate-methyl. Make first application at bud breakand the second 10 to 14 days later. Under wet conditions, apply a third spray 10 to 14 days later.

Bacterial leaf spot (bacterium)

Small, water-soaked circular spots that eventually turn brown to purple. Twigs may become girdled, resulting in a blight. Prune and remove affected parts. Apply a copper fungicide several times at 10-day intervals, beginning when leaves emerge in the spring.

Powdery mildew (fungus)

Whitish, powdery mold on leaves. If serious, apply fungicide spray at 7- to 10-day intervals. Use myclobutanil, triadimefon or wettable sulfur (95 percent) or lime sulfur. Start when mildew begins to appear on leaves.
