Collecting
When sampling soybean fields, examine plants carefully, paying particular attention to the lower half of soybean plants. Examine the undersides of leaves.
- If you see something that looks like a possible soybean rust problem, do the following:
- Select several representative leaves and other above-ground portions of the plant displaying the potential rust symptoms.
Packaging
- Press flat leaves that are dry between dry paper towels or newspapers.
- Place the leaves in a zip-lock type self sealing plastic bag.
- Place the first bag inside a second similar bag, making sure the exterior of the second bag does not become contaminated with potential spores.
- Using a permanent marker, label the bag with the date, host plant, name of the collector, phone number, collection location within the field, field location, county, and nearest intersection.
Shipping
- If the sample can't be shipped immediately, keep the leaves cool by placing them in a cooler or refrigerator until they can be shipped. Do not leave in direct sunlight or in an enclosed vehicle. Degraded samples are useless.
- As soon as possible, submit samples to the University of Missouri Extension
Plant Diagnostic Cinic..
- Ship in a box, sealing all seams with tape.
- Ship samples by overnight delivery.
- Notify the plant diagnostic clinic if possible, to let diagnostic staff know that a potential soybean rust sample is on the way.
- If you have any questions about soybean rust or submitting potential soybean rust samples, please feel free to contact clinic staff by e-mail or the phone number above.
